The remarkable story of Waukegan's piping plovers begins long before the birds arrive each spring. Healthy dunes, native plants, and thriving Lake Plain habitats provide food, shelter, and resilience for countless species - including the Great Lakes Piping Plover, Blanding's Turtle, and Pitcher's Thistle.
That's why we're excited to share the Lake Plain Coalition's new Restoration Work Days at the Waukegan Dunes. Whether you're new to habitat restoration or an experienced volunteer, these hands-on events are a wonderful opportunity to learn restoration techniques, explore this unique ecosystem, and help care for one of Illinois' most significant natural areas.
The work taking place in the dunes complements our Sharing Our Shore–Waukeganefforts on the beach, reminding us that protecting wildlife begins with protecting the habitats they depend on.
