Please join us for a morning bird walk at Heron Creek Forest Preserve. The preserve features rolling landscape of scenic woodlands, wetlands and wide-open fields, all creating exceptional wildlife habitat. Considered a birdwatcher's paradise, 180 species of birds have been observed here, including a resident population of waterfowl and herons--the site's namesake.
With its gently rolling contours and hilltops, Heron Creek contains the south branch of Indian Creek which offers exceptional wildlife habitat and plant communities including a sedge meadow. The creek traverses the property west to east, exiting in the southeast corner where the site adjoins the Reed Turner Nature Preserve.
Where their borders meet, Heron Creek and Reed Turner Nature Preserve share some of the same natural elements including similar plant species and habitat for many different bird species. This area of the site also contains mature oak/hickory forest species.
Bring binoculars (if available). We will have a few loaner pairs if you need to borrow one for the walk.
Please dress accordingly for the weather conditions and wear appropriate footwear for walking 4+ miles on mostly crushed-gravel trails. Sunscreen, insect repellent, drinking water, and a hat are all good items to bring along.
The walk duration may extend a bit beyond the scheduled slot, but feel free to leave at anytime.
In case of inclement weather or changes in location/start time, the trip leader will notify all participants via email.
This trip will be limited to 20 participants. If you register and realize ahead of time you will not be able to make the walk, please send a text to the trip leader so another spot can be re-opened.
