YCC Builds Nest Boxes for Bluebirds

For the third year in a row Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) of Waukegan built bluebird nesting boxes for the 60 plus trails in Lake County. Over 770 boxes are monitored by volunteers each nesting season. Lake County Audubon Society (LCAS) has again provided a $500 grant for materials to build 40 boxes by the students under the supervision of the construction foreman. These boxes will be used to supplement and replace old boxes in need of repair.

The volunteer administrator of the bluebird monitors, Jack Nowak, spent time with the YCC members to educate them on the types of birds that use these nesting boxes and the type of habitats they live in.

As mentioned in the YCC February newsletter “This hands-on project gives our members the opportunity to learn about conservation, craftsmanship, and the important role humans can play in protecting local ecosystems. Over the years, these nesting boxes have provided safe homes for bluebirds and other small birds, helping support healthy populations along their migration routes”.

This is a great opportunity to work in partnership with YCC in our community. YCC is also a non-profit organization that shares our mission of educating people in conservation and restoration of natural ecosystems. Their mission also mentors and empowers young adults to succeed through education and training in life skills, career pathways, and environmental stewardship.

We would like to thank all the donors for providing funding to help programs like this.
