World Migratory Bird Day 2026

World Migratory Bird Day 2026
Saturday, May 9, 2026

This year’s World Migratory Bird Day theme, “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!”, highlights the important role community science plays in bird conservation. From backyard birdwatchers and eBird checklists to organized bird counts and beach monitoring programs, the observations shared by people around the world help scientists better understand migration patterns, population changes, habitat needs, and conservation challenges facing birds today

Join Lake County Audubon Society as we celebrate World Migratory Bird Day, a global event dedicated to raising awareness about migratory birds and the importance of protecting the habitats they depend on throughout their incredible journeys.

Each spring, millions of birds travel thousands of miles across continents, stopping in places like Lake County’s lakefront, wetlands, woodlands, and prairies to rest, feed, and nest. From warblers and hummingbirds to sandhill cranes and endangered piping plovers, migration connects our local communities to ecosystems across the hemisphere.

World Migratory Bird Day is a reminder that we all play a role in helping birds thrive. Simple actions like planting native species, reducing window collisions, keeping beaches and natural areas clean, and supporting habitat conservation can make a meaningful difference.

We encourage everyone to get outside, enjoy spring migration, and take a moment to appreciate the extraordinary birds sharing our communities this season.
