November Program: Proforestation – Secrets of the Carbon Capture Forest

  • Aspen Drive Public Library 701 North Aspen Drive Vernon Hills, IL, 60061 United States (map)

Join us for a program that examines the forest in ways you’ve probably never considered before.

Most people have heard that forests capture CO2 but how much CO2 does a tree absorb and for how long? How can we best use forests to reduce the impact of global warming? What is the best way today to create and manage forests for maximum CO2 capture? Every forest landowner, even owners of very small patches of forest, or even a single tree, can help reduce the impacts of climate change if they understand the carbon capture forest strategy.

We need to think differently about our forests and how they are used.

Steve Waller is a retired instructional designer, Technical Training Specialist and an environmental educator. He has taught wind and solar energy courses at Northern Michigan University and writes for local publications. For over twenty years his “Reading the Woods” course for the Michigan DNR’s Becoming Outdoors Women program (BOW) has introduced the public to the hidden workings and intricacies of U.P. forests. He is also a former wilderness program owner and guide (Quetico Provincial Park, Ontario, CA). Steve has photographed and identified the highest iNaturalist.com species count for Marquette County, MI 1,580 species (2024), exclusively on only 80 acres of forest called the Waller Research Area.
