Bird Walk: Illinois Beach State Park-North Unit

  • Illinois Beach State Park North Unit Isherwood Parking Lot Zion, IL, 60099 United States (map)

Date:  Friday, October 3, 2025

Time:  8:00 AM - 10:45 AM

Activity Level:  Moderate, Walk ~4 miles (mix of sand, crushed-gravel, dirt, and paved terrain)

Join Nat Carmichael and Lake County Audubon for spectacular early October bird outing!

October is one of the most exciting months for migration. Warblers are still moving through, unusual sparrows may make an appearance, and our regular winter sparrow species are beginning to arrive in good numbers. Shorebirds are continuing their long journeys from the Arctic to southern wintering grounds, so there’s always the chance of spotting something unexpected. Depending on temperatures to the north, a few waterfowl species may also start appearing. Raptors ride this busy migration route as well, so we’ll keep our eyes to the skies for whatever surprises the day may bring!

We will meet in the IBSP North - Isherwood Beach Parking Lot, pinned in Google Maps below.

Bring binoculars (if available).  We will have a few loaner pairs if you need to borrow one for the walk.

Please dress accordingly for the weather conditions and wear appropriate footwear for walking ~4 miles on an assortment of terrain. Sunscreen, insect repellent, drinking water, a hat, and an extra layer for warmth are good items to bring along, in case.

Feel free to leave the walk at any time. We may extend the overall duration of the walk beyond the listed time for anyone who would like to continue a bit longer.

In case of inclement weather, the trip leader will notify all participants via email.
